About Me

Maria Luisa Merani

I received both the M.Sc. (summa cum laude) and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1987 and 1992, respectively. In 1991 I spent one year at the Computer Science Department of the University of California in Los Angeles. Since 1993 I'm with the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where I'm currently an associate professor.

In the past, my research interests have spanned over the area of radio communications, with emphasis on wireless multimedia. At present I'm involved in research on peer-to-peer systems for live video streaming, gossiping algorithms and online social networks.

I have been and I am currently very active within the Technical Program Committee of several flagship international conferences (IEEE Globecom, IEEE ICC, IEEE WCNC, IEEE ISSSTA, IEEE PIMRC). I served as the technical program co-chair for the 2nd IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems 2005 (ISWCS’05) and for IEEE Globecom, 2007 and 2009 editions.

In 2010 I have been the guest editor of a special issue of the Springer journal "P2P networking and applications" focused on peer-to-peer for video delivery and one of the authors of the Springer book "Handbook of P2P networking". I have also been the general chair of the sixth IEEE International Wireless Pervasive Computing Conference, IEEE ISWPC 2010. In October 2009 Cambridge University Press published my book "Hands on networking: from theory to practice".

I am an IEEE Senior Member and an editor of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.
